Field Crop Scout Training:
Earning CCA Credits in Hands-On Setting

Keith Glewen, UNL Extension Educator, kicks off the Introductory Level Field Crop Scout Training, May 8, at the UNL ARDC.Keith Glewen,  UNL Extension Educator, kicked off the Introductory Level Field Crop Scout Training, May 8, at the UNL Agricultural Research and Development Center (ARDC) near Mead, NE.

The one-day comprehensive training is part of UNL Extension's Crop Management Diagnostics Clinics and is sponsored by Extension in the University's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Almost 50 registrants will receive CCA credits in a hands-on setting, providing them with the knowledge to work as a field scout for coops, seed companies and farmers.

Topics and presenters for the training include Glewen, How Corn and Soybean Plants Grow and Develop, and Nutrient Deficiencies; UNL Extension Educator Micahel Rethwisch, Soybean and Corn Insect Management; UNL Extension Educator Lowell Sandell, Identifying Weeds - Plant Morphology; and UNL Extension Plant Pathologist Tamra Jackson, Crop Diseases.

Last year's participants rated the estimated value of the knowledge gained at an additional $4.92 per acre.

Gary Zoubek, UNL Extension Educator in York County, and Jennifer Rees, UNL Extension Educator in Clay County, both weigh in on the research and the benefits of the program for participating farmers.  Mobile Beef Lab rolls into the Science Festival at the ARDC

Students from several area junior high schools participated in a one-day Science Festival taught by UNL Extension and held at the ARDC near Mead, Nebraska. The students enjoyed a day of Ag science education, including the UNL Husker Mobile Beef Lab, Wind Power, soil DNA sampling, and nutrition.

Southeast Delegates attend National 4-H Conference

SREC Delegates attend National 4-H Conference in Washington, D.C.SREC 4-H delegates, Alex Whitney and Samantha Schroeder recently attended the National 4-H Conference in Washington, D.C., March 24-29, 2012. The conference was held at the National 4-H Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Accompanying Whitney and Schroeder is Chaperone, Jackie Steffen, Extension Educator from Cedar County. The National 4-H Conference provides 4-H youth an opportunity to make decisions that will shape their future, by including their ideas and recommendations in 4-H program development.

The University of Nebraska held a conference in Lincoln last week designed to bring together stakeholders interested in the future of rural America. University of Nebraska vice president and IANR Harlan Vice Chancellor Ronnie Green discusses the importance of this conference and what role agriculture plays in planning for the future.

On-Farm Research Yields Valuable Data for Producerscornstalks

Corn growers can take an active role in a new on-farm research project sponsored by University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension in partnership with the Nebraska Corn Growers Association. The goal of the Nebraska On-Farm Research Network (NOFRN) is to implement a statewide on-farm research program addressing critical farmer questions. Three corn production research topics will be targeted in 2012: irrigation - water application management; nitrogen management; and corn population study.
